Historic building in Trujillo – Cáceres
Currently used as a hotel, this impressive Renaissance building was built in 1570 and occupies a total area of 965.50 m2. It is located just 300 meters from Trujillo's Plaza Mayor. The Monfragüe Natural Park is about 25 km away and offers spectacular natural scenery.
The Palace, overlooking Trujillo, houses elegant interiors and vaulted ceilings, a beautiful library with high ceilings and wooden beams, a bar area and lounges. The outdoor swimming pool and sun terrace are located in the palace gardens.
Isabel Mendoza, widow of Martín de Chaves Calderón, commissioned Trujillo architect Francisco Becerra to build a residence for her family in 1570. Becerra designed and built a unique building. So singular, that it is the only palace in the world that has a corner door and window.
To support the corner load of the entire block in two bays, Becerra used Gothic technology with pointed arches; the pointed arch at the entrance was framed by a simple cymatium in the shape of an alfiz, under a classic Renaissance pediment which frames the shields of the surnames of the Chaves-Mendoza couple. The balcony is flanked by two slender columns which in turn support the pediment and give the whole an ascending sensation with respect to the slope of via Palomas. Becerra blends Gothic and Renaissance.
This corner balcony deserved the honor of sharing the 1993 50 peseta coin, which commemorates Extremadura, on the obverse, together with the Roman Alcántara bridge.
Of the total area, seven hundred and nine square meters correspond to the garden area and the rest is built-up area which is described as follows:
